Are you within the word limit (150-250 words)? Do you have keywords present? Does the abstract give a summary of the key points that the paper will be discussing? The abstract generally discusses the research topic, research question, participants, methods, results, data analysis and conclusion PLEASE FOLLOW THESE HEADINGS!!!!! Introduction and Background Research Question Hypothesis This section introduces the topic to the reader and provides the reasoning behind why it is an important issue to research in nursing. This section should be supported by evidence and the references should be used to further support your research question, hypothesis and research plan. Within this section towards the end you should transition into a paragraph that states something along the lines of, the purpose of this research proposal is to (insert research question) then state this writer hypothesizes that (insert hypothesis) If you have a separate header called “research question” and/ or “hypothesis” this is incorrect and points will be deducted if it appears in the final version I have personally provided feedback regarding every students research question and hypothesis. If questions and hypothesis are still worded incorrectly then points will be deducted. Literature Review The literature review provides the reader with an overview and “current state of the science” related to your topic. This section should include various similar studies and findings that support the hypothesis or overall research design. Ideally this section should be no less than 1-2 pages. It should also include various peer-reviewed sources that are less than 5 years since publication. Research Design In this section you will identify the type of quantitative study you plan to conduct. The type of design you will use will be based on the type of research question you are trying to answer so for example, if I am exploring mother’s perspective of school accommodations for kids with ADHD identify the quantitative methods that will be used. Is it a descriptive cross sectional? Longitudinal? Are you manipulating the sample or is it random selection? Methods This section discusses the proposed population and includes whether there are any specific inclusion or exclusion criteria. You will also describe where the sample will come from such as the hospital? In the community? Etc. Will you use a random or convenience sample? You will also speak about sample size? Reviewing in your book an ideal sample size for the type of study you are conducting is highly suggested. You can reference your book on sample size and how to determine how many people are needed for your study. One paragraph should address the measures that you are using to test your research outcome variable. So for example if you are looking at depression you might discuss the Beck Depression Inventory. You should describe the measure, how many questions? What is the rating scale of the tool? So is it 1-5 and if so what does a rating of 1 mean versus 5. Also include the reliability and validity of the scale. Results Section This section will focus on similar studies and detail what results they found. You can also hypothesize what you would expect to find if you indeed did conduct the study and support your reasoning for those outcomes. I recognize that you didn’t conduct the actual study and this section may feel “made up” however you should have evidence supporting the conclusions you expect to occur. Discussion Discuss how these results impact nursing and why you think this research is important. Do you think this study would support your hypothesis based on the literature? Are there any concerns with bias with your study? Can it be generalized to other populations? Conclusion Provide a summary of the important findings that you learned from this proposal. What future studies might contribute to this topic area? What gaps did you find in the literature? Reference Page Does this section follow APA format? Is it alphabetized and indented properly? Do you have at least 10-15 sources listed?
