Why I chose Industrial relations from other programmes.
Industrial relations has been defined a discipline that integrates several other interrelated disciplines, with an aim of addressing issues concerning employment. It seeks to ensure equality and better working conditions in the working environment.
One of the reasons why I choose this field of social sciences is the fact that I always wanted to offer my services directly to the community. i have also desired working with the Non-governmental organizations (NGO’s) which are international in nature. I have the desire of eliminating the social discrimination and prejudice especially in the working environment. Since the days of the industrial revolution, little has been done to ensure better working conditions as a motivation for the employees.
Bearing in mind that the world has moved from the agricultural to industrial economy, it would be prudent to create a better environment which ensures high productivity. Industrial relations has the potential to work hand in hand with the government to ensure that the rights of the workers are respected, and also that they are not exploited.
The other reason I chose the Industrial relations is the fact that it is an international discipline. This means that am not confined within the boundaries of my state. This therefore increases my chances of employment. It is also good to note that the problems related to labor are more or less universal meaning that working in other nations will not prove difficult.
One of the best gift that I can offer to the world today through this discipline is to ensure that there is equality in the working environment in terms of job placement and remunerations. From my own observations, I have noted great discrimination on basis of gender and race when it comes to payment. Men are found to earn more than their female counterparts even where they both have same qualifications. In matters relating to race, the blacks and other races have received lower income as compared to the whites though they might have same experience and education levels.
Because of the above reasons, I chose to do the Industrial relations so that I can understand the problems further for the purpose of addressing them in the most appropriate way. The other reason is the fact that the working conditions of the workers has not been taken seriously. I have observed the producers of the raw materials for example continue to languish in poverty while the owners of the industries continue making millions of profits. This demonstrates high levels of disparities between the two parties. Apart from that, there is also a discrepancy between what the employees offer to the factories and industries as compared to what they end up receiving as wages.
Therefore, the above social issues have prompted me to pursue this discipline to bring normalcy in the job market. This on the other hand will help quell some of the social problems such as uncalled for strikes which create tension and instability in a country. At the end of the day, there will be equal distribution of resources which will serve to alleviate living standards of the people and create more employment opportunities.
