Me personally I don’t care for the word to much but when I hear it I think of prejudice or discrimination against another person or group. Since we grow up with a certain mindset and learning about black history or about the Native American, we are only to think of it as one way unless educated otherwise. As stated in our reading, “If we live in an environment in which we are bombarded with stereotypical images in the media, are frequently exposed to the ethnic jokes of friends and family members, and are rarely informed of the accomplishments of oppressed groups, we will develop the negative categorizations of those groups that form the basis of prejudice” (Tatum, 1997). This section of the reading is a perfect explanation of how we see the world now. With personal experiences with even my own family, racism is very active among all groups of people. I am half white and half Mexican. My best friend growing up was half Mexican and half black. I remember one time my mom asking me if my friend was black and I responded by saying “no, she’s light brown.” I did not see color at all but only who the person actually was. My cousins, who were racist, would talk mean about Mexicans and being half Mexican I would ask them “so you only like half of me?” and they would joke it off. So, I still don’t understand why people have to bring up the color of ones’ skin to determine what type of person they are mentally. Unfortunately, that’s the type of world we live in and we can only educate ourselves and grow for it one day.
