Nursing Leadership and Management:
Trust. Leaders not only must be trustworthy, but also must trust their
staff, building a culture of open, honest communication.
∑ Respect. Like trust, respect goes both ways: The leader must garner
the respect of his or her staff but must also have respect for the
expertise of others.
∑ Vision. Rather than micromanaging the details of the organization’s
activities, the leader’s job is to communicate the big picture. He or
she should be able to take new ideas and challenges and integrate them
into the organization’s mission.
∑ Self-confidence. Being confident is not about feeling infallible, but
rather about knowing one’s strengths and weaknesses. Leaders reflect
their self-confidence in their voice, body language, and the way they
react to conflict.
∑ Communication skills. If there is one trait that can lead to the
downfall of an otherwise strong leader, it is poor communication skills.
Being able to communicate effectively is critical for engendering
respect, motivating staff, and displaying sincerity.
∑ Enthusiasm. Good leaders can motivate staff to excel despite
challenges. They make tough projects fun and display passion for their
work.
∑ Feedback. Strong leaders recognize and reward good performances. They
are also open and receptive to feedback about their own work.
∑ Ability to fulfill commitments. Following through on promises, coming
prepared to meetings, and responding to staff questions are all
necessary leadership characteristics.
∑ A focus on growing more leaders. Effective leaders do not keep success
to themselves, but rather concentrate on developing those who will lead
the organization after them. They identify and support new prospects and
willingly give advice to up-and-coming leaders.
This list of traits is certainly a “tall order,” don’t you think?
Which traits would you prioritize? Why?
What are some effective ways to learn these skill?
