Short Written Report (to be submitted online) (Weighting: 10%)

This written report aims at assessing students’ capability in (1) evaluating the ideas and/or strategies of a ‘creative product’; and (2) identifying and discussing key issues of a creative industries sector in Hong Kong.

Guidelines

Select any ONE ‘creative product’, which should be created mainly by local creative people of Hong Kong, and should be launched/ first introduced publicly anytime after 1 Jan, 2017 (i.e. anytime from 2017 to now in 2020). Examples of ‘creative product’ include: § movie / online video § music album / concert / outdoor live show / music video § drama, dance or other performance § book / comic book § painting /installation / contemporary art piece § public art / street art § software/interactive games / mobile apps § TV or radio programme § fashion item § product design § And many others…

In your view, your selected ‘creative product’ should be ‘good’ and ‘creative’, and you want to recommend it to the class (which means it should not be a hugely popular creative work that most students might have already known).

You should have first-hand experience of this ‘creative product’. You are NOT allowed to discuss a ‘creative product’ simply based on what other people/media describe or comment.

You are required to inform the lecturer your selection in or before Lecture 5. The lecturer may give you specific advices based on your choice.

Submission deadline: 23:59 on the day of Lecture 6: § 11 March (Wed class); 12 March (Thu class); 13 March (Fri class) § Submit your 2-page report (PDF format) via SOUL

Your report should include the following:

1. Comment on and evaluate the creative ideas of this ‘creative product’. Please refer to the course materials of Lecture 2 and 3, which may assist you to discuss the creative ideas more in-depth. You may consider to discuss and evaluate the ‘creative product’ in terms of the following (DON’T discuss all of the following points – make your choice): § content/messages/emotions/viewpoints expressed (‘What it

says’) § form/styles/techniques/channels used (‘How it says’) § how it is different from other ‘creative products’ of the same

type/category § how it is different from the previous ‘creative products’

created by the same creative person(s) § ‘creative practices’ of the creative person(s) who created this

product

2. Identify and briefly discuss some important issues or trends of the relevant creative industries sector(s), which might affect the production and/or dissemination/ distribution/promotion process of this ‘creative product’.

Please refer to the course materials of Lecture 3 and 4. For example, by looking into the relevant issues and trends, you may discuss what opportunities, threats or difficulties that the creative person(s) might be facing when producing or distributing this ‘creative product’.

Requirements: § 2 pages in PDF format. Put down your name and student ID number

on the first page. Indicate clearly the basic information of your selected ‘creative product’ (e.g. title, name of the creator, year, where you saw it)

§ You may include pictures and website links in the report. The report should be written in English.

§ You are NOT required to write a “formal” report with the usual report format and style. A creative report will be appreciated, as long as your viewpoints, reasoning and ideas are elaborated clearly with adequate details.

§ Avoid too much description of facts and data. Make more analysis. Give your own specific comments.
