The threat of terrorism attack is a problem facing each and every country in the world; as a result many countries in the world have turned to IT in order to help in the fight against terrorism. Just like many other countries that have borne the brunt of terrorism, Spain has also employed the use of IT to fight terrorism. About a decade ago Spain experienced the effects of terrorist attack, Spain’s main railway station in Madrid known as Atocha was attacked and about 191 people died while about 2,000 others were injured. Other countries such as the United States of America that have experienced terrorism attacks are also training security personnel in other countries to help combating terrorism (http://www.nytimes.com/2013/11/18/world/africa/us-weighs-mission-to-train-libyan-forces.html?_r=0).

Get Help Now!The security agents in Madrid took about three weeks tracking down the suspects whom they traced to an apartment in Madrid. Seeing there was no other way to escape the suspects blew themselves up. After the attack the security agents were able to analyze the factors that made the station an easy target for the terrorists and the reasons they were not able to identify the suspects fast enough. According to a retired Spanish by the name of Richard Huelin colonel who owns and runs a security website, the technology used back then was not very much useful in fighting terrorism. Richard explained that “Ten or 15 or 20 years ago, the technology was basically limited to phone taps,” he said. “The use of closed-circuit TV’s was barely getting off the ground.” The images that were captured by the cameras in the train station were not clear enough and more so were taken from a long distance. The lack of proper surveillance led to the police using other means such as examining the chemicals used in the attack so as to determine the origin and tracing the origins of the SIM cards that were used in the detonators that failed to detonate (http://www.pri.org/stories/2013-05-30/spain-invests-technology-fight-terrorism).
The situation at the Train station has however changed as the Atocha station now has the latest state of the art, surveillance equipment such as high resolution cameras. The police have also been equipped with facial recognition software; furthermore the police also have a couple of data bases that are digitized to identify and crosscheck people’s identity in an instant. Cameras have also been installed in other parts of the country almost every movement of all the people is monitored as Richard says “You leave your house for work and you’re filmed by multiple cameras,” he continues “at the pharmacy, the tobacco shop, at banks.”Security firms in Spain have also developed their own technology to help in fighting terrorism such as unmanned aircrafts and tiny helicopters mounted with cameras even cameras with infrared light to enable them film at night. The security organs interviewed were all of the same opinion that if the technology used in the train station today would have been present back then, the terrorist attack that took place about a decade ago in the train station could have dealt with appropriately (http://www.pri.org/stories/2013-05-30/spain-invests-technology-fight-terrorism).
Conclusion
Terrorism is a global problem and is not restricted to any country; the advancement of technology has enabled various countries to be able to thwart terrorists attack in their respective countries. Terrorist have turned to IT to reign terror on innocent victims thus it is also prudent that countries also make use of IT to prevent terrorist from carrying out terrorists. And if by any chance they do succeed in carrying out the attacks tracking them down will be easy which will ensure they don’t get away to carry out another attack but are brought to justice.
