Brief description of the theory type that appeals to you most
Due to my past work history and current position in the mental health field, the micro level theories appeal to me the most. Micro level theories are more beneficial to me within my practice. With the mental health population, a practitioner would need to utilize information that provides straight forward and direct information, but also entail information that has been tested for better understanding of individuals (Robbins, Chatterjee, & Canda, 2012). In addition to utilizing micro level theories, scientific theories of human behaviors would be utilized as well. Scientific theories are important to me because these theories introduce evidence-based practices that are utilized today to help clients overcome their problem areas, challenges with diagnosis, etc. Scientific theories of human behaviors “are especially emphasized in the movement for evidence based practice” (Robbins, Chatterjee, & Canda, 2012, pg. 8).
Describe a case you might encounter in for which that theory type might apply
Currently, I provide individual therapy to a female that has been diagnosed with major depression and that also has an intellectual disability. With this case, I must apply micro level theories with her because I am only working to meet the needs and goals of my client as an individual. Due to my client wanting to return to abusive relationships every time she ends a current relationship, I had to rely on scientific theories of human behavior for further understanding and better assistance. For this case, I relied specifically on the system theory to help me understand her behaviors and her needs that she feels like she is not getting met to understand her actions. In this case, I could realize and understand that my client has the need and desire to be loved by a male and the need to surround herself with male attention. With that understanding, I gained insight on her behaviors of wanting to reenter previous relationships just to fill a void of wanting and needing company of a male. Following this information, I could assist my client with learning how to develop positive relationships, distinguish negative relationships from positive relationships, and changing her expectations of personal relationships with males.
Explain why that theory type is the best one for the case you described.
Micro-level theories and Scientific theories of human behaviors are used in all of my cases on my case load every day. Furthermore, these two types of theories will always apply to social workers that practice in the mental health/counseling profession. These theories are great, because they help the social worker or professional understand the client behaviors that can be resulting from the client presenting problem that he or she is experiencing. In addition, these types of theories provide interventions to help the client understand his or her behaviors, make progression, and become stable through evidence based practice approaches and interventions. Therefore, the micro level theories and scientific theories of human behavior were best for my client because they provided me with “conceptual frameworks that can be used to examine the presenting problem”, assist me with the understanding of how human behaviors can be affected, and ways human behaviors can be impacted when a client need is not being met like the female in my case (Robbins, Chatterjee, & Canda, 2012, pg. 14).

A theory that appeals to me the most I would have to say is Micro level theories. The reason mainly being as according to Chafetz (1987, p. 25 as cited in Robbins, Chatterjee, & Canda, 2012, P. 6) . . . Through my internship, I have begun facilitating a group that focuses on Ericson’s psychosocial stages of development through journal writing prompts. Because of the writing prompts the individuals can develop a self-awareness and identify presenting mental health challenges. Just last week the journaling prompt resulting in the individuals having flashbacks and discussing self-harm. Due to working on meeting the needs of my clients I had to rely on theories of human behavior to get a sense of understanding as to why this is occurring, and the need to release the feelings they are experiencing. After increasing my knowledge, I was better able to assist my clients in developing coping skills to intervene with thought and action.
