  1. What is your community? Possible answers: our neighborhood, our city/town, our school, groups to which students belong (clubs, religious organizations), etc. The most basic definition of community is a group of people who share a common culture. Today, it’s possible to develop communities online with people who do not live in the same place, but for the purpose of today’s lesson we will focus on a definition of community that also includes living in the same area, such that the communities’ achievements and shortcomings become part of the shared culture.
  2. What are civil rights? What does the term mean, both in the context of the movement that peaked in the 1950s and 1960s and in a more general sense? In short, civil rights allow individuals to be full and equal members of society. In the United States, civil rights are social, economic, legal and political liberties, many of which are guaranteed by the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. The ability to exercise these rights gives people access to social goods and services, such as the pursuit of employment and access to the legal process, and a voice in our democracy.
