What role do morals and ethics play in everyday media platforms? The following exercises are designed to encourage you to find answers to this question, while also building your research skills in observing, analysing and making sense of ethics in relation to digital media.
In order to give the class a common focus and to enable us to better compare our findings during in-class discussions, you are asked to concentrate on a specific internet platform: the livestreaming entertainment service Twitch (https://www.twitch.tv). Don’t worry if you’re not a regular user of Twitch (nor am I!). It is common for sociologists and anthropologists to research cultures that are very different to their own and which they may have only limited familiarity with. In fact, it could be argued that being an ‘outsider’ may help you to be aware of patterns or behaviours that other people may miss.
You’re asked to complete the following exercises with a partner, as for some exercises you will need to compare your findings and discuss the relevance of them together. Some of the exercises will involve you interacting with other users, and you may need to register an account with Twitch for this (you can delete the account after completing the exercises if you no longer wish to use it). The exercises are designed to guide your thinking and encourage you to explore different approaches. It is important to emphasise that the questions should be ‘starting points’ to spark your investigation into a particular issue. Cursory answers are discouraged. It is expected that responses to most questions will instead be several paragraphs in length, presenting quality description proper reasoning, evidence and analysis. The total word count of your responses to all of the sections combined should be a maximum of 4,000 words. This total excludes these text instructions and the question headers in the worksheet, which are approximately 815 words in length.
As these exercises primarily aim to develop your skills in documenting and reflecting upon how moral norms shape actual media use, you are not expected to undertake extended reviews of literature. However, if there are particular sociological theories or writings that help you in answering the questions, you are welcome to cite them in your responses, giving full references in the bibliography section.
