What makes art good, and what makes art bad, in general? For this question, you can and should use examples of your ideas from your own field of art and/or design, but describe and make a case for what you think makes art and/or design be good in general. What is it that you need to bring to your craft that makes it be worthwhile for people? Another way of putting this is, suppose you create something in your field, and you decide you can do it ”better,” and so you begin to modify it. What would count as making it ”better”? What would make you think it was not good enough in the first place? Can you generalize to talk about any artistic creation (or any sort of artistic creation at least) in your field? Please explain your position as well as you can, giving examples from your own experience, readings and/or professional field to illustrate your logic. If you find and cite other writers’ views, evaluate their argument critically by giving your own responses, with particular regard to the logic of their position. If you only give your own views, then support them with as much evidence and correct logic as you can. Either way, please foreground your careful logical presentation of your case.
Once you have selected which of the three topics above to write on, then do the following for this first preliminary submission:
Name which question you will write on. State why you are personally drawn to that question.
Summarize in one to two paragraphs your initial answer to the question, stating your main reasons.
Find three scholarly writings (articles or books) that deal with this issue and cite them in MLA format.
Chose five key words, phrases, or terms that relate to the subject matter of your essay. Research their definitions from at least two sources, but define each of them in your own words.
