The occurrence of Hepatitis B and C in the United Kingdom is not widespread, given that the country has taken a number of management steps to curb it. However, there are some foreigners visiting the country from places where the disease is still a major healthcare problem, such as Africa and Asia, who suffer from these illnesses. According to Public Health England (2014), there is a disproportionate increase of the disease among the ethnic minorities that reside in the country. The effect is that there is a growing disease burden among this population. To show the seriousness of this health issue, the NICE indicated that as of 2012, there were about 270 chronic cases of hepatitis B per year (NICE, 2016). Given these statistics, it is imperative to investigate the disease by taking a demographical approach. This paper is therefore a research proposal to conduct a narrative synthesis of the cultural barriers that present in the testing and treatment of hepatitis B and C, and the existing interventions to overcome these.

Background and rationale

To effectively manage and treat various diseases, there are some fundamental standards that the health authorities of various countries use. These standards form the framework upon which the health officials investigate and research the occurrence and nature of disease, as well as the treatment techniques that can be applied for maximum effectiveness (Shaw, Ramachandra and Lucas, 2011). For instance, the framework for the management and treatment of hepatitis B and C entails detailing of the diseases’ epidemiology, rationale and recommendations for approach (Health Protection Agency, 2011). Applying a strict framework in the management of the disease has led the UK to have one of the lowest incidence and prevalence of infections worldwide. As well, one of the key recommendations by the health authorities regarding the rationale and evidence base for the standards, is the use of well-executed studies with control groups. As such, health researchers have the freedom of applying a number of approaches to studying diseases, and use of special populations to characterise the management and treatment of the diseases holistically. One of the common approaches to achieve this in health studies is the conduct of narrative synthesis while focusing on a demographical population (Carmichael, 2015). This approach not only helps in characterising the key findings, but also establishing the most appropriate strategies that are currently in use.
