• In the first instance ‘contextualising’ means assessing the character of, and clues present in, the work to draw conclusions about how the work ‘fits in’ with other artworks. These may be other artworks produced by the same artist, or within the same ‘movement’, or in the same era. These are questions about how an artwork relates to the art of its time.
• AND/OR you might see how the work relates to other works produced before or after its time. These are questions of influence. Artworks are not made in a vacuum. They often represent responses to preceding art (this may be considered as a development of previous methods and ideas, or it may be seen as a reaction against previous methods and ideas about what art ’is’).
• Equally, artworks often provide the sources for development and reaction on the part of later artists. Some artworks and artists have become very influential, and many of the artists and works from the first half of the twentieth century that we will be looking at in the lectures have had an enormous effect on the development of later artists’ work.
In the second instance, this processing of assessing how artworks fit together, or collide, and how they are connected to past artworks and the future works they may influence allows us to consider the broader issues of how artworks and ‘art’ fits in with social, political and cultural contexts – artworks, ‘art’, tells us something about the broader contexts within which it is made; and this, ultimately is what your projects will do.

• Because as an artist, you need to be able to make skilled assessments of the meanings and contexts of your own work.
During the early seminars you will identify the artworks that you wish to use for your assignment, and the issues which your chosen works indicate.
So, what do you choose?
You need to choose TWO works:
1. One must have been made between 1865 and 1945
2. The second must have been made between 1945 and 2005
You are free to choose whichever images/objects you wish, but your need to be connected in some way which is apparent you.
Some of the ways in which your works are connected could be:
• FORMAL – they look similar in terms of the way the work is made up of shapes/colours (they may be ‘abstract’ for instance) ; they may be stylistically similar ’expressive’ brushwork, for instance)
• ICONOGRAPHIC – they may be imaging similar subjects (‘landscape’, ‘industry’, ‘still-life’, for example)
