PHYSIOLOGICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF PSYCHOACTIVE DRUGS
The purpose of this short paper assignment is to identify and describe the physiological and psychological effects of the four major families of psychoactive drugs: depressants, stimulants, opiates and psychedelics; how they lead to drug dependence; and how medical professionals can help addicts recover.
Some of the specific drugs in these four families are:
(1) STIMULANTS: nicotine, caffeine, amphetamines, cocaine;
(2) DEPRESSANTS: alcohol, barbiturates, tranquilizers, inhalants;
(3) OPIATES: heroin, morphine, opium;
(4) PSYCHEDELICS: psilocybin, LSD, mescaline, marijuana, ecstasy.

First, review Chapter 2 in your text: “Neuroscience”, dealing with neurons, the nervous system, the endocrine system and the brain to gain an understanding of how psychoactive drugs work.
Next, review at least 4 research articles about psychoactive drugs. You may use sources such as magazine or newspaper articles, web sources, or published research papers in professional journals. You must document a minimum of 4 such studies/articles as your sources in your references page.
In the body of your paper, you should answer these questions:
1. What effect does each of these 4 drug families have? Specifically:
a. What are their PHYSIOLOGICAL effects? (for example, speeds up heart rate, slurs speech, amplifies sensitivity, etc.)
b. What are their PSYCHOLOGICAL effects? (for example, increases aggression, enhances mood, produces hallucinations, etc.)
2. How does drug dependence develop? When does drug use develop into drug dependence?
3. What physiological and psychological methods are used to help addicts recover?
4. What are the implications of what you learned for your current and/or future use of psychoactive drugs? How might you help a drug dependent person gain control?
FORMAT FOR TERM PAPER
The term paper must be typed in 12 point Times New Roman font, double spaced, printed on one side only. A minimum of 5 pages, plus 1 cover page and 1 references page is required.

Each paper must include the following:

I. TITLE PAGE
A title page with the paper title, your name, course name, course instructor, date, centered on the page

II. BODY OF PAPER
Pages must be numbered in the lower right section of each page, beginning with the body of the paper (do not number the title page)

a. Begin with an introductory paragraph explaining what your paper is about and why this topic is relevant.

b. Next, provide answers to each of the 4 questions in the assignment.

c. End with a concluding paragraph, summarizing the contents of your paper.
III. CITATIONS:
In the paper, after the quotation or paraphrase, put the author’s last name, the year of publication, and the page number, in parentheses, as follows: (Myers, 2003, p. 206). APA style uses no footnotes. If a whole paragraph is paraphrased from an interview, you may put one citation at the end of the paragraph.

(Jones, 2003) for paraphrases or personal communication

IV. REFERENCES
The last page of your paper should be titled “References” and list all books, articles, web sites, etc. used in writing the paper. These should be listed alphabetically by author, in APA style.

Whenever you state a fact, you must cite its source in the paper, right after it. Direct quotations must be put in quotation marks. The full references must go on the references page. All sources used in writing the paper must be in the references. This includes information from the textbook, lectures, conversations, interviews, websites, and pamphlets. Papers should contain no more than 20% quotations. Use of someone else’s ideas or information without proper acknowledgment is plagiarism, a serious offense, and will result in a zero on the paper.
