For your midterm assignment, you will write a dialogue of 600-800 words. Generally, the dialogue is a debate between two imagined philosophers about a specific question. You may write the dialogue as if it were (1) a scene in a play or (2) in the Socratic-style (Plato’s Crito is a good example of this.) Imagine these two characters meet and get into a debate over an issue. It might be natural to incorporate the question they’re debating (or a paraphrase of it) into the dialogue itself (e.g., as Socrates and Crito move towards general questions over the course of Plato’s Crito), or you may feel more comfortable having your characters launch into the debate from the start. You should feel free to be creative with this assignment.
Instructions:
Choose one of the following prompts for your dialogue:
- A debate between a psychological egoist and someone who argues against psychological egoism. They will debate the question: “Is all moral action actually self-interested?”
- A debate between a cultural relativist and someone who argues against cultural relativism. They will debate the question: “Is morality, i.e. what’s right and wrong, relative to each culture?”
- A debate between two contemporary philosophers. They will debate the question: “Can an immoral person, like a sociopath or Nazi, be happy?”
- A debate between a utilitarian and a deontologist. They will debate the question:
“Is it morally permissible to kill one person to save five?”

In structuring your debate, keep in mind some generic patterns that it may follow. (1) Philosopher A is arguing that Philosopher B ought to adopt the position of Philosopher A on the issue in question. (2) Philosopher A is trying to refute the position that Philosopher B has already adopted on the issue. (3) Both philosophers are arguing that their own position on the issue is stronger than the other’s position. Being clear about the pattern will help.
While your philosophers are goal-directed in one of the ways specified in (2), they need not reach a resolution in their debate. That is, they may not come to any agreement by the end of the scene you write. Whether they come to a resolution will depend on the main issue on which they are debating, what they focus on in the debate, and the fundamental commitments with which each one begins.
