Mucus, also referred to as secretions, is a normal part of the pulmonary system that lines the inside of the larger airways and serves as a protective layer of the airway mucosa by trapping foreign particles such as debris, bacteria and allergens.
When a foreign particle enters the lung the irritant will become stuck in the sputum, which is then moved towards the throat and mouth by millions of tiny hair-like projections called cilia. These trapped particles will then either enter the epiglottis and be swallowed, stimulate a cough reflex and be expelled through the mouth during a cough, or stimulate the nasal mucosa and cause sneezing which then forces the particles out through the nose and/or mouth.
