Journal Assignment

Occupational Outlook and Skills Journal AssignmentAt the end of chapter 3, Volti discusses how in postindustrial
society, advances have led to greater productivity, higher skills among
workers, and a better-educated workforce (2012, p. 56). Given this, as
an employee in today’s society with a changing workforce, education
along with experiences that can speak to skills and traits you possess
are important.Depending on where you are at on your career path, please think about
how this assignment can best support you and your goals. For some of
you, this may mean researching your current job or industry and noticing
any trends that can help you think about possible future decisions. For
others, this assignment may help you gain more perspectives on what you
might want to do if you are just starting out. As with all of our
journal assignments, the goal is to use what you are learning to relate
to your own practical work goals no matter where you currently are on
your path. This journal assignment has two parts: Number 1Go to the Bureau of Labor Statistics and research at least one
occupation that fits with your work interests and goals (this could be a
job on your current path, a future one you are interested in, or one
that you learned about in last module’s discussion activity). Search the
Occupational Outlook Handbook at http://www.bls.gov/ooh/ (Links to an external site.)and note the following for the occupation:
What they do (take note of the overview of job duties)
Work environment (which industries employ the occupation?)
How to become one (training/education/work experience/skills needed)
Median pay (take note of varied salaries depending on industry)
Job outlook (is the occupation projected to grow or shrink – by what percent compared to average, or stay the same?)
Optional: Research specific state and area data to find out more details about the occupation in your region.
Optional: Research similar occupations to find out what other jobs may be a good match for you.
Write 150-250 words on the following:After analyzing the BLS data on your chosen occupation(s), what
stands out to you in the research? Use statistics in your report to give
overall structural picture of the occupation(s)/industries that connect
with course materials. (For example, what does Volti say about the
changing workforce, and how does your chosen job/occupation fit with
needs and values in postindustrial society?)Number 2Take note of skills, education, and experience that you have acquired that fit with the chosen occupation(s) researched above.Write around 100-200 words on the following: Name 2 experiences that you have had (these could be a job, internship, volunteer experience, sports team, or the like that you might include on a resume).Write at least 3 specific action statements for each of those experiences
to highlight your skills that fit the job/industry that you have
researched. What have you done that you can point to showing those
skills? Use specific numbers to quantify at least 1 action statement under each experience, and be specific about each of them. (Review the lecture in the Module 2: Learn section if you have trouble with this step.)List additional training or skills you need that are necessary for the industry or specific job that you have researched.
