2. The rapid commercialization is what fundamentally characterizes contemporary South Korean film
industry. In particular, newly emerging genre films evince the increasing importance of producing
commercially appealing movies. While catering to the mainstream taste of mass audiences through
genre conventions, similar plots, and seemingly repetitive stories, however, many genre films still
try to address social issues and engage in serious conversations about contemporary Korean
society with their audiences. Choose TWO films from the list, and discuss what particular social
issues they attempt to explore and how each film employs and/or challenges their respective genre
conventions in dealing with such issues. Be sure to cite at least TWO essays from the list below.

contemporary Korean cinema has interacted with other national film cultures as well as global film
trends. How does this interaction (or interactions) affect Korean cinema in terms of industrial
practice, style, content, their global reception, and so on? Again, be sure to refer to at least TWO
