In this first major assignment, you will continue the research that will define your semester in 102. This initial project will consist of two parts: an eight-source Annotated Bibliography and a paper proposal that demonstrates the conversation you are joining.
Annotated Bibliography (10%)
These sources can include those from your completed and upcoming ILPs.
Your eight-item Annotated Bibliography must include:
· At least two scholarly, peer-reviewed articles;
· At least two contemporary/credible newspapers/websites;
· At least one cartoon or image relating to your topic (a graph, satirical cartoon, etc.);
· At least one video or audio source (a Ted Talk, YouTube video, Podcast, film, etc.).
For each source:
· Write a properly formatted MLA citation;
· Summarize the central claim and major evidence;
· Assess the reliability of the source;
· Explain how you will use it in your paper (if you cannot do this, find a new source);
· 150 words per source +/- 10%
Project Proposal (5%)
Your proposal consists of two parts: demonstrating the conversation that you wish to join, as shown by your current sources, and then explicitly explaining what you wish to argue. Your final argument can be about almost anything, as long as there is a connection to current events, be they political or social.
Part One: in ~700 words, demonstrate how the sources of your annotated bibliography synthesize to form a singular conversation. You do not need to directly quote from your sources, although this may help. Note: do not just re-list your sources like you did in your An. Bib., but explicitly demonstrate how they work together.
Part Two: in ~300 words, explain what you want to argue. You must include a rough thesis (understanding you will adapt this as you continue), explain why you want to follow this particular argument, and consider what issues you may face trying to make this specific argument. The stronger a proposal, the easier it is to start a paper, so good luck.
Dates:
· Feb. 13: Library Session, Thomas Cooper
· Feb. 20-25: peer review
