This essay should be written using Chicago Manual of Style, which includes footnotes and a Works Cited page. A critical review of an artist involves using specific evidence from selected artworks, to explain your opinion. Critical Review Writing Outline Introduction (1st Paragraph) In the first paragraph set up the reader. The most important part of any paper is the first paragraph. In this paragraph you will first, introduce your artist using the artist’s full name. Create a thesis statement. A thesis statement identifies the subject you are writing about and your opinion of that subject. It is usually a single sentence near the end of the first paragraph that presents your argument to the reader. You do not need to go into detail in this paragraph. This is the part of the paper where you briefly provide the basic information and then set up the reader’s curiosity. Although this paper is an account of your personal perspective, this type of essay should be written in the academic objective “third person” point of view, avoiding using the words “I” and “we” in your analysis. An example of stating your initial reaction in the third person voice would be, “one may appear shocked by the unconventional choice of materials…” The rest of the paper, the body of the essay, gathers and organizes evidence that will persuade the reader of the logic of your interpretation. (Body- Paragraph 2) In paragraph 2 identify what motivates this artist This is background research on the artist and context of the work. (Body- Paragraph 3-5) In Paragraph 3-5 describe the artworks made by this artist This is an in-depth description of what you see. Use specific details. Describe the artistic discipline used like drawing, sculpture, performance, etc. Describe the formal elements that you see in the work like line, shape, color, form and texture. (Body- Paragraph 4) In paragraph 4 state your interpretation Give your interpretation of the artwork and cite some facts to support your opinion. Discuss the theme or environmental issue is the artist exploring. Make a connection between your interpretation and the issue being explored in the artwork. (Conclusion- Last Paragraph) Give your evaluation Based on your research do you think that this artist contributes something meaningful to the world? Explain why or why not.
