1.) On the question of “periodization”. Karatani has given us a “parallax view” of two periodizations of modern Japan: one according to the names of the Emperors (in Japan), which he calls the “discursive space of modern Japan”, and the Gregorian calendar (1900, 1920, 2020, etc.). In class, I have suggested a specific periodization of capitalism according to “stages of development” (mercantilism, liberalism, imperialism). My question is: how should we think about ideology and the nation-state when we compare the periodization of capitalism in Japan  with what Karatani calls the “discursive space of modern Japan”, as well as with the Gregorian calendar? Moreover, how does our “parallax view” give us new meaning about the history of capitalism in Japan? In your response, please refer to specific passages from texts from the second half of the course. I also encourage you to refer to the Handout I distributed in class. 2) On colonialism, capitalism, and ideology. How might we detect problems of “The West and the Rest” in the representation of colonial Korean workers in Japan, both during and after World War I? How did some Koreans internalize and accept this paradigm, and what were its social and political consequences? At the same time, how did other Koreans struggle against this paradigm? 3) On surplus populations and labour power. Althusser argues that ideology reproduces the relations of production through concrete practices of interpellation, which individuates Subjects. How is this process of interpellation related to “the commodification of labour power” and the organization of surplus populations? Put differently, how does state power partake in the process of commodifying labour power, and what are the specific elements of this process in the case of Japan and colonial Korea? Refer to The Proletarian Gamble and Walker’s text for reference.

4) On theory. Surveying the entirety of the course, in your estimation, what are the critical tools and elements for a Marxist theory of ideology today? How does the analysis of ideology clarify our understanding of capital, state, and nation? How to construct a theory of ideology that traverses Marx’s critique of idealism, Marx’s Capital, Althusser’s theory of ideology, and revolutionary discourses, such as the debate on capitalism in Japan? Most importantly, how does a theory of ideology help us to articulate and critique presently existing modes of capitalist domination? For this essay, you may refer to any texts used throughout the course.

5) On “racial ideology” and racism. For many people , “racism” and “capitalism” are too considered two totally different and separate things, as if one is completely independent of the other. But are they, really? The question is: How would you theorize the relationship between capitalist development and the historical development of racism, given the example of Japan’s colonization of Korea from 1910 to 1945, as well as many, many other examples? How would you explain racism through the analysis of capitalism, especially in its imperialist stage (where modern colonialism emerges world-wide), and how does this reveal the limitations of past, as well as contemporary, “racial ideology”? Put differently, how does this question–of the inter-connections between racism and capitalism– deepen our understanding of the intersectionality of “race”, “class” and “nation” (not to mention “gender” and “sexuality”).
