Referring to a team located in the U.S National capital by the most degrading term used to describe Native peoples is a national disgrace. 3) Magic Johnsons legacy on the basketball court is beyond dispute. He is one of the greatest players to ever play the game. Yet his true significance lies in the fact that he has acted as an ambassador for all those Americans who suffer from HIV infection. From his first diagnosis to today, he has helped change American attitudes about the disease from the early 1980s when it was referred to as Gods curse to homosexuals to a much more informed view of the disease as a global tragedy and call to action for humanitarians around the world. 4) Billie Jean King was one of the best female tennis players of her era. Yet, her greatest accomplishment was becoming one of the first female athletes to declare herself a lesbian. From her initial announcement to the modern time, Billie Jean King stands as a universal symbol of the struggles and triumphs of the LGBT community. THESE are the kinds of arguments that I want to see you address in your papers. I hope that you can see the difference. This is really a mini-essay on the HISTORICAL IMPORTANCE of the athlete, team, sport, event you have chosen. When writing this analysis you WILL NEED TO PROVIDE PRIMARY AND/OR SECONDARY SOURCE EVIDENCE. Given the nature of the topics, many of you may choose to consult online sources. This is perfectly legitimate. YOU MAY USE WIKIPEDIA for background detail. However, you should not rely on a SINGLE SOURCE of any kind. You need to consult at least THREE different sources to provide the necessary argument to back up your thesis statement. You will be graded on the strength of your argument, your research effort, proper use of Chicago Manual Style footnotes and bibliography and the clarity of your writing style.
