Introduction
The nursing profession is essential in healthcare delivery. Nurses play an important role during the healing process among patients within healthcare institutions. The duty of the nurse is to ensure that patients are comfortable during the healing process. They attend to patients and engage them to facilitate their well-being. This paper provides a reflective analysis of my experiences during my training to become a professional nurse.
How learning transformed me from a student to a health care professional
During my days in the nursing school I have gained a lot of knowledge regarding the nursing experience. My course tutors put a lot of emphasis on the need to ensure that students become caring nurses once they graduate. I have been able to learn various nursing theories that emphasize on the caring aspect in nursing. Essentially nursing is not just administering prescription to the patients. Caring nursing goes beyond this to include engaging the patient at various levels (Cox 2012).
While in college I established that nursing is not as simple as many people assume. This is a full profession that requires dedication and empathy from the individuals concerned. I have been able to learn about various nursing theories. Thus it has come to my knowledge that nurses have a special role to play in the patients healing process. Apart from administering the medication nurses make the patient feel comfortable. The presence of the nurse also reduces the patients anxiety. Therefore nurses should always engage the patients to understand how they can make them feel comfortable (Cox 2012).
How academic study helped in linking with my professional skills or values
Nursing theories form the core of the nursing profession. These theoretical frameworks put a lot of emphasis on being with the patient. In this regard the nurses are required to emphasize on the welfare of the patient and try to make the patients life as comfortable as possible (Brooker&Nicol 2003). During my stay in college the tutors used various teaching strategies to ensure that students grasp what was being taught. As students we had group discussions presentations self and peer evaluation and a compulsory internship to give us a real life experience.
During group discussions students could consult widely and share different views regarding the topic of discussion. Class presentation required students to conduct an elaborate research on the topic before presenting to the class. This was quite interesting in that I had to conduct a thorough investigation on the topic that I was to present before the due date. In this case I mastered the topic thoroughly and I was able to explain everything eloquently. Self and peer evaluation were also critical in the learning experience. During my training as a nurse I could conduct self-evaluation to determine my strength and weaknesses. Also the tutors encouraged peer evaluation among students to remove any bias in the evaluation process. The self and peer evaluation played a critical role in helping us enhance our strengths and improve on our weaknesses. Internship provided us with the real experiences of a professional nurse. During this period we were able to practice the responsibilities of a professional nurse in a health care setting. This is especially when we were required to practice what we had leant in class.
How learning magnified my strengths as a health care professional
I have always liked nursing ever since I was a young child. My memories are still clear on what happened when I was six years of age and my mum got sick. I could not leave her side and when she was hospitalized the doctor and the nurses asked me to go home though I could not listen to their advice. I was only forced out of the hospital by my father who assured me that when I wake up the following day he will let me check on my mother. The passion for nursing thus developed in me at a tender age. In fact I have always been by the side of any family member who gets sick. This has been a great strength towards the realization of my dream career of becoming a professional nurse. Having joined a nursing college I was presented with the opportunity to learn about different nursing theories which have indeed complimented my dream of becoming a nurse.
How internship program helped me acknowledge my weaknesses
While I was on my internship I remember that I used to follow the instructions of the doctor in charge without failure like other nurses who were already practicing. I thought I was acting as a caring nurse until one day I fell sick during the internship period. I was admitted in the same hospital and subjected to the experiences that patients experienced. When I was hospitalized I needed the nurse to be with me all the time. I felt anxious and helpless and thus the presence of the nurse gave me some comfort. Indeed I preferred to be engaged by the nurse even when he or she was not administering the prescription. From this experience I realized that I needed to take the nursing theories seriously if I was to become effective in caring for patients. I learnt that nurses take for granted the aspect of engaging the patient while carrying out their duties. I was also falling into the trap but with the short experience that I went through while sick; I learnt to take the nursing theories with the seriousness that it deserves (Moon 1999).
What I have learnt about nursing profession through academic experiences
Nursing is one of the most trusted and respected profession. However one only comes to appreciate this profession once he or she is left under the care of the nurse. From the academic experience that I have got nursing is critical in the success of a health care system. The nurses are the ones who play a critical role in the patients healing process. Nonetheless it must be appreciated that the nursing theories are the core of the nursing profession. Therefore what is taught in college should be put into full practice. It has been observed that once individuals graduate they forget about what they were taught about on how to become caring nurses (Moon 1999). Indeed most nurses fail to engage the patients while carrying out their duties. This is not good as caring involves making the patient feel cared for and comfortable.
Summary
Having gone through an enriching academic training I believe that I am fit to become a professional nurse. The training program in college was rigorous and exposed me to the necessary aspects of the nursing profession. Apart from the nursing theories I was able to learn about the professional ethics in nursing. With this I am well armed to become a health care professional. Particularly the nursing theories are critical and should aid me to become a caring nurse in my profession.
