A. Hollywood films often celebrate the success of its characters and the narratives are centred around the protagonist’s ultimate success at their central goal. However, the theme of failure is a significant component Alien, Citizen Kane and The Shining. Choose two of the films, analyze the significance and depiction of two of the protagonists’ failure(s) (options may include as an individual, as a citizen, in their professional life or in their personal life) in the film. In your opinion, what conclusions can you make about the depiction of gender and the expectations surrounding success in these films? How do the characters’ experience differ from the typical Hollywood protagonist?

B. The gap between reality and illusion – verisimilitude or its lack — is a primary thematic concern in Singin’ in the Rain, The General and The Shining. However each film deals with this issue in significantly different ways. Compare and contrast the question of reality and illusion in two of the following films: Singin’ in the Rain, The General and/or The Shining. In your opinion, how is the tension between the actual and the imaginary resolved or not? Give specific examples to support your position. What conclusions can you reach about Hollywood’s attitude towards reality and the imaginary?

C. An original student-generated topic. The essay should be comparative in nature and discuss two of the films screened in Weeks 1-6.

REQUIRMENTS

1. Your essay should be approximately 1000-1200 words in length (approximately 3-4 double-spaced pgs. in 12pt. Times New Roman font), double spaced with 1” margins.
2. Your essay must include detailed examples from at least two films that relate to your thesis. Avoid plot summaries. Additionally, film reviews or evaluations of the quality of a film (good/bad) are not appropriate for a critical essay and should be avoided.
3. You must provide at least three direct quotes from two different printed resources. These may include class readings, the lecture slides or material from the Sheridan Library. Google, Wikipedia or similar wiki-written encyclopedias, or sites such as IMDB are strongly discouraged for this assignment because they lack the necessary academic rigour or quality.
4. Papers should be clearly labelled with a title page listing the student’s name and student #. Follow the guidelines of these sample papers, presenting your writing in either APA format.
5. All films that are discussed in the essay, as well as the weekly readings and lecture slides MUST be listed in your bibliography. Use APA for your Works Cited and your in-text citations. Examples and further resources are available through Slate and the Sheridan Library. Essays without bibliographies will be returned to the student will be returned unmarked for amendment.
6. Underline your thesis and include both introductory and concluding paragraphs. Use complete sentences (point form or bullet points are not acceptable). The essay should follow the expectations of formal academic writing, with a clearly articulated thesis and proper paragraphing.
