Face The Trouble
Through the books into the Wild and the film Grizzly Man, the story of Chris and Timothy, who died in the wilderness, caught the public’s attention. Owing to it, there is a good contention among both grassroots and elites regarding that in which ways are they both escaping something by leaving their “normal lives.” A cornucopia of perspectives can be easily spotted. On the one hand, some people argues that Chris and Timothy went to the wild to escape some of their troubles in ordinary life. On the other hand, the opponents contends that they intended to suicidal to escape the world. My view is that Chris and Timothy both avoiding something by leaving their “normal lives.” They stay far away from their troubles and find some other things to replace their old life. However, wilderness masks some problems but still results in pain in the end.
The first reason for holding my opinion is that Chris and Timothy refused to deal with their troubles in ordinary life, and they went wild to escape. As we all know, Chris and Timothy both had some difficulty in their healthy growth. They got these troubles due to some kind of dysfunction they had. Chris had a rigorous father who always had a high demand for Chris. Therefore, Chris had a high demand for others and himself. As Krakauer points out, “More even than most teens, he tended to see things in black and white. he measured himself and those around him by an impossibly rigorous moral code”. (Into the wild, 122)He was such a strict person and was not tolerant of forgiving others’ imperfections. When he finds his father’s fault, he felt hard to accept, and that hurt him a lot. As a result, he begins to keep away from others because of the afraid that deep relationships will explore other’s imperfects. On the other hand, he also did not like the rules of the social. His parents hope he become a success person which did not attract Chris. More often than not, when we got big trouble, it is more comfortable to escape that instead of dealing with that. That’s was also what Chris chose to do. Chris did not want to deal with these problems instead went to the wild instead. Wilderness was far away from society. In the wild, there is no one but himself, so he did not need to get along with others or arrange by his parents. For Chris, the wilderness was a utopia. There were fewer conflicts and rules, so wilderness masks the dysfunction of Chris. He could do anything he likes. In the story of grizzly man, Timothy had some kind of malfunction as well. He used to induce in drunk every day, and his relationship with others was broken up. He had those bad habits for a long time, so it was difficult to change. At the same time, there also had the pressure of making a living. It required high will power to change his awful situation, and he never tried to. When he went to the wild and got alone with grizzly, he was like to find a new world. In the wild, there was no broken relationship and no pressure in life. The old trouble will no bother him. He enjoyed getting alone with grizzly and did not induce in drunk anymore. Getting out of his awful situation, he could start a new life. Hence, he chose to give up his old experience.
Another reason why I am the advocate for my argument is that through the wilderness, they find something to replace their old life. Most of the time, when we find it is hard to do something, we intend to stop that and find other ways. Take Timothy as an instance; he did not do well in his healthy life. Maybe he once wants to change his life, but it was so hard. Alcohol muddled his mind. No one would encourage him because of the broken relationship. He cannot find hope to make life better. At this time, he went to the wild and saw that grizzly. The wilderness was like a new world that was far away from the old one. This was a chance to start a new life. He enjoyed taking care of grizzly, which is exciting and meaningful work. Wilderness stand-in for some kind of dysfunction of Timothy. He used to be lazy and lack self-control. In the wild, there was not too much pressure or rules, so his dysfunction was masked. In addition, In the wilderness, Timothy found his value. In the past years, Timothy had accomplished nothing. He was considered a failure. However, when he was taking care of those grizzly, people would say he is so great and respect his work. His work in the wilderness replaced his old awful situation. Chris had some similarities with Timothy. Chris unsatisfied with the healthy life, and he did not want to accept that or adapt to it. As a result, he found himself a new way: went to Alaska. Chris loves this mysterious place and wants to explore it. However, in his trip, Alaska is more than a dream place. Alaska stand-in for some kind of dysfunction of Chris. Through the wilderness, he finds a new way to prove his life value. Alaska provided him an original aim. He finds another way to make his life meaningful, which could replace his old lifestyle. That’s why he enjoyed the trip and insist on taking a risk.
Although I agree that through the wilderness, Chris and Timothy could escape some trouble, I cannot accept their behaviors that give up their healthy life. When it comes to the topic of what we can do with an unsatisfied life, most of us will readily agree that we can escape the old life to become happier. However, let’s look at this issue more closely. Too much emphasis placed on one side of the story may obscure another set of problems. The above-mentioned claim is misleading at best and dangerous at worst. Searching memory rooted in my mind, I find my experience the ideal proof for my perception. When I was a child, my friend, Lily argued with me because of some different opinion. Then I decided to stop play with her instead find other friends. However, when I was get alone with other friends, we still have some different opinion which hurt our relationship again. Then, I realized that the important thing is that I need to learn be tolerate with difference between others and me. If I cannot be tolerate, no matter how many friends I changed, we still have those problems. So, under no circumstances can we have the right to deny that we can escape our dysfunction to avoid complicate. That was the reason why Chris and Timothy still got trouble in the end. For Chris, he did not realize that he needs to be tolerated to forgive others’ imperfections. Chris cannot escape this problem because he would finally know that he need to communicate with others. Like what Chris said in the end: “HAPPINESS ONLY REAL WHEN SHARED” (Chris, 189). He refused to go deeper with friends to escape troubles, but he indeed need society. Therefore, he must face up his dysfunction and deal with the difficulties, so he could enjoy his relationship with others. The problem of Timothy was more obviously. He he never take life seriously. He always did something that can easily result lousy situation. In the healthy life, because of this kind of dysfunction, he got a lot of troubles. In the wild, he always tried to take risks. Like what he said: “Nobody friggin’ knew that there are times when my life has been on the precipice of death!” (Timothy Treadwell). He never stops to challenge the horrible things, like alcohol and death, to put himself into a bad situation. In the wild, it also brings an unfortunate disaster. Timothy never treats grizzly seriously, so he ignores the dangers of play with grizzly. He never learns professional knowledge about taking care of grizzly, and that results in his horrible accident. If Chris or Timothy had realized their dysfunction and fixed it instead of run away, they would be better no matter where they are. Therefore, from this contrast, can people sharing the same experiences and minds with me find common grounds and see why I insist on my viewpoint without any hesitation.
Chris and Timothy escaped their troubles and went into the wild. In there, they could be far away from those things that bothered them and did not need to face their problem. Besides, through the wilderness, they both found new words to replace their old life. However, neither of them had really escaped the troubles because they did not fix their dysfunction, which still brought new problems. To sum up, all things considered, I would like to make an affirmation to my claim that there are some ways that people can escape their troubles, like be far away from the old life or find some new things to replace the old lifestyle. However, these are unhealthy ways because we must find our what is the reasons that result in those troubles and try to fix it out, or new problems will still come up. After all, we cannot escape all the time. What I have presented, I hope from within, can be adequately justifiable to make a strong case for my preference.
