Get Help Now!The population of Toronto is growing at a rapid rate. The re-development and densification of the downtown has accelerated in the last decade as a way of accommodating residents and businesses. Yet sometimes change is problematic. New buildings may be badly designed (e.g., lack of sunlight, insufficient public space, or exposure to noise). NIMBYism may arise, where people don’t want certain services (e.g., drug-treatment centres, bus garages) or types of buildings (e.g., 80-storey towers) located near their homes. Lower-income people may be driven out of their neighbourhoods when prices get too high. And businesses may suffer when ethnic populations no longer exist to support them.
In view of this growth and change, can Toronto’s treasured neighbourhoods remain desirable places to live? Are they sustainable? A sustainable neighbourhood is a place where people want to live now and in the future. It is a neighbourhood that is socially, environmentally, and economically healthy, meaning that it is safe and comfortable, built to last, and able to support itself. In groups of 4-6 people, write a 1500-1700 word (approx. 6-7 page double-spaced) report examining a downtown Toronto neighbourhood in transition. What issues and challenges are facing this particular neighbourhood? How is development or change affecting the area socially, environmentally, aesthetically, and economically?
While you will most certainly need to do research for this assignment, the final product should not simply be a compilation of outside sources. It should reflect your own analysis of and insights on the issues facing the neighbourhood and should apply course content as much as possible.
College databases are the best source for articles from journals, newspapers, and magazines. Local or community newspapers and websites might also prove useful.
Directions
- Select one neighbourhood in Toronto to analyze from the following list: Parkdale, Liberty Village, Leslieville, the Entertainment District, Mirvish Village, East Bayfront, King-Spadina, Humber Bay Shores and Mimico, Junction Triangle, Little Portugal, or East Harbour.
- Research, examine, explore, and assess the neighbourhood in terms of the changes that are occurring in the present. The goal is not merely to report what you find out, but to consider the implications for the long-term sustainability of the neighbourhood.
- Write an informative introductory paragraph introducing the area and offering an overall sense of the neighbourhood’s long-term sustainability. Label this section with a clear heading.
- Analyze the following aspects of the neighbourhood as the main section of your report. Plan to address at least some of the bulleted points within each category. Provide examples and details to support your ideas. Include images (your own or borrowed, properly cited) where possible to help explain the topic to the reader. Label each section with a clear heading.
