Exploratory essays ask questions and gather information that may answer these questions. This genre calls on you to research a question/topic, present your findings to your reader, and, ideally, gain a deeper understanding of the question/topic that allows you to come to a conclusion about the current state of the conversation surrounding this topic. However, you are not expected to have a definitive answer to your question, or to argue a single position. The main point of the exploratory essay is to conduct inquiry into a topic, gather information, share that information with readers, and come to a reasonable conclusion.
You are writing to learn more about your topic/question. An essay like this takes an objective stance, considers the various viewpoints, and explains those viewpoints, using the process of research to investigate a subject. It extends beyond the obvious answers or surface level understanding of the topic. In an exploratory essay the writer should:
1. Clearly and concisely describe, define, and give an overview of the specific topic/question (summary)
2. Analyze the issue, using relevant texts (research)
3. Identify and summarize several viewpoints/positions on the topic (what have you found in your research? What are others saying about this topic/question?)
4. State your personal interest in the topic and how your understanding of it has been effected by your research
This essay is designed to help you practice the following course objectives:
• Engage in the collaborative and social aspects of writing processes;
• Locate research sources (including academic journal articles, magazine and newspaper articles) and evaluate them for credibility, accuracy, timeliness, and bias;
• Compose texts that integrate your stance with appropriate sources using strategies such as summary, critical analysis, interpretation, synthesis, and argumentation;
• Practice application of citation conventions.
PREPARING TO WRITE YOUR ESSAY:
Start with the topic you’ve selected for your research. From here you will likely need to narrow your topic to something quite specific (remember you only have 4-5 pages to investigate it).
Ask a question about this topic that you want to research further. A good question for research won’t have an obvious or simple answer. It won’t be a yes/no question. It should be something you find interesting and want to learn more about. It should be relevant to people today (your audience).
Explore your question. Read about it. Read some more. Find sources that are credible, accurate, timely, and unbiased. If in your research you discover that all your sources say the same thing or offer the same answer, you might need to rethink your question or broaden your research.
Select 3 sources to use as the main texts in your essay. These are the sources you will summarize, quote from, and explain as you present your research and offer the various viewpoints to your topic/question.
*First Drafts need to be printed and brought to class (4 copies) for workshop on the day they are due.
