Intro (one paragraph):

  • Choose one of the introduction strategies we discussed in class (quotation, question, historical review/review of controversy, anecdote, general to specific [or vice versa]) and use that to begin your paper.
  • Make sure you have a thesis statement that at least hints about the position you will take in relation to essay you are analyzing.
  • Mention the title of the essay you are analyzing and its author.
  • Do not summarize the essay you are analyzing here.  Save that for the next section,
  • Do not make an announcement (In this essay, I will…. OR The purpose of this essay is to….).
  • Give background.  Set the scene. Give some context.

Summary (probably one long paragraph; could be more than one):

  • Include all main ideas from the original essay, but just an overview. A brief synopsis.
  • Leave out examples and illustrations.
  • Should be in your own words; no quotations.
  • No opinions.  Reader should not be able to tell from the summary what you think about the essay you are analyzing.
  • Should read smoothly with good transitions.
  • Use voice markers with strong verbs throughout the summary! (Goldstein contends…..  Murphy argues…..)

Evaluation (could be a few paragraphs):

  • Give specific examples from the essay you are analyzing of how the writer uses logic (logos) to convince you that he is right.  (What logical arguments does he use? What rational reasoning? What expert opinions or sources? What statistics? How does he appeal to your mind and thinking?)
  • Give specific examples from the essay you are analyzing of how the writer uses emotion (pathos) to convince you that he is right. (What emotional arguments does he use?  What stories or personal examples? What speculation? What fear tactics? What loaded language? How does he appeal to your emotions and feelings?)
  • Discuss how the writer displays ethos or credibility in his writing.  How believable is the writer? Why should you listen to him? What makes him qualified to write about this subject (background, experience, education, expertise, personal connection to the subject)?  Are there things about the writer or the way he makes his argument that undercut his credibility?

Response (a paragraph or so):

  • What do you agree with and disagree with in the author’s argument?   Find a few specific things with which you agree and a few with which you disagree, if possible.
  • Quote from the original essay.  Don’t just say “Murphy is right.  I agree with his ideas about childhood.”  Find a sentence or two to support each point you make and quote that sentence in your essays.  (I agree with Murphy when he argues, “………”)
  • Be sure to discuss WHY you agree or disagree.  Give reasons.

Conclusion (a paragraph):

  • Choose one of the conclusion strategies we discussed in class (significance of subject, need for research, recommendation, quotation, question, anecdote, speculation about the future) and use that to end your paper.
  • Do not just sum up!
  • Do not tell your reader what you just did. (“In this essay, I analyzed….”   “In this essay, I hope you learned [or saw]…..” “I hope it is clear that …..”)

Overall:

  • Use MLA in-text citations after each quotation or close paraphrase. (Murphy 272).
  • Include an MLA works cited list on a separate page at the end of your essay.
