ELEGATION AND MANAGERIAL SKILL IN NURSING.This assignment is a reflective account of a critical incident which occurred two weeks into my first practice placement in year 2 of my nursing programme. This essay will evaluate the incident which relates to the delegation of tasks.
My personal qualities, self-awareness and leadership style to manage skilful delegation in clinical practice will be discussed. A pseudonym will be used to maintain confidentiality of the unit in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC, 2008a). Gibbsa Cycle of Reflection model (1988) will be used to structure the essay, presenting first a description of the incident, which includes the key factors in relation to the delegation of task, then moves on to look at feelings, evaluation and analysis of the incident. Finally, an action plan will be provided to summarise my continuous learning and development.

Get Help Now!I was given the opportunity to run the shift in my second week in a new placement practice. This was my first practice placement in year 2 of my nursing programme and was based in an in-patient psychiatric unit. I was encouraged to make decisions and choices which incorporate the trust values under the supervision of my mentor. My duties as a shift leader were to take hand over, check communication book/dairy and using the shift planner to allocate tasks to my colleagues.
After taking the handover of the shift, I realised that the health care assistants and other qualified staffs were mainly agency workers as I had only just met the majority of the staff members, this caused some difficulty in allocating tasks to them due to their capabilities being unknown to me prior to meeting them.
Nevertheless, I took the handover and used the shift planner form to allocate tasks to the staff available for the shift. I also felt some resistance from the qualified agency staff as they appeared uncomfortable accepting me in the person of a student nurse delegating tasks to them. It seems most student nurses are apprehensive when delegating tasks to health care assistants and registered nurses as these groups see the student nurses as being junior professionals and therefore should not be telling them what to do. (Holland & Roberts, 2013).
As I had difficulty in allocating tasks to the staff members, I ended up retaining more tasks to myself than I ought to and this led to exhaustion at the end of my shift due to service users mainly coming to me for support as I was the shift leader for the day.
The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC, 2010) standards for pre-registration nursing education stipulate that nurses/student nurses must be self-aware and recognise how their own values and principles may affect their practice. Reflection is a review of experience from practice so that it may be analysed and evaluated to be used to maintain, inform and improve future practice (Bulman, 2013; Goldsmith, 2011).
I consider the above event to be a critical incident. Critical incidents have been defined as events that can overwhelm a nurseas coping skills (Mitchell & Everly, 2001) and produce unusual distress (American Psychiatric Association, 2000). However, Hannigan (2001) states that critical incidents can be helpful in certain situations in the sense that they make a practitioner reflect on the situation and cause him/her to look for alternatives, such as developing a solution, a managerial style (e.g. a skill) for dealing with such situations in the future. In my own case, the critical incident which I encountered has highlighted the need for me to sharpen my understanding of delegation and to develop an improve appreciation of its importance.
Delegation in mental health care is both a legal and management concept involving evaluation, planning and intervention by which selected clinical and non-clinical tasks are transferred by a person in authority (a?the delegatora?) to a competent subordinate (a?the delegatea?) in a relationship of trust along with the responsibility and authority needed to perform those tasks. Delegation is a leadership attribute required by every nurse to be able to ensure adequate care, safety and treatment of patients. It requires critical thinking and judgement as well as a positive attitude and leadership .
