Who Are Asian Americans?
The Asian population is very diverse. They are not just Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese; this population encompasses so much more. Consider the following questions:
- Who are Asian Americans? Where do they come from?
- Would you have known that they were Asian if they didn’t tell you?
- How do they feel about their culture?
- What do they want to know about their culture?
- Do they know their ethnic language(s)?
- Finally, how do students who do not know much about their past, culture, or language cope with their identity in the United States’ educational system?
Watch the videos, Our Stories: Asian American Youth DC (Part 1) and Our Stories: Asian American Youth DC (Part 2). Write down the names and countries each of these students, and then respond to the following: As their teacher, how can you help fill in the cultural, social, and /or historical gaps of knowledge these students possess? Be sure to include the name of the student in the video when you refer to them in your post.
Guided Response: Respond to two of your peers using the students they identified in their post. Consider some of the challenges these students presented, and imagine these conflicts took place in your classroom. How would you manage the conflict? Review this week’s reading your text, Culturally Proficient Instruction: A Guide for People Who Teach, to reveal some strategies. Also, because prejudice is often bred from ignorance, explore the following PBS resources and work with your classmate to find a way to honor Asian American history, culture, and native languages in a traditional classroom.
