Gestalt therapy plays a lot of attention on here and now. The initial goal is for the clients to expand their awareness of what they are experiencing in the present moment (Corey, 2015). At the beginning of this session, Stan wasn’t feeling this session. The therapist asked Stan, “What was he aware of”. Stan shared that he had a dream and in his dream, he was cleaning a toilet naked. He stated while he was cleaning the toilet he looked up and seen the therapist at the door. Then when he looks up again he seen his dad at the door. Gestalt practice attends to a client’s thoughts, feelings, behaviors, body, memories, and dreaming (Corey, 2015). The part that stood out the most of his awareness, was him naked on his knees cleaning a toilet and being watched.
When clients speak, about their past, the therapist may ask them to reenact is as if though they were living it now (Corey, 2015). One of the aims of Gestalt therapy is to help clients become increasingly aware of their present experience (Corey, 2015). Stan explored different parts of his dreams. The things that stood out the most was him being naked and the thoughts of the therapist and his father, in his dream. He thought the therapist and his father would think of him as a freak and a weirdo. Stan always feels like someone is judging him or thinking negative. The reason is because his dad never had anything positive to say to him while growing up as s child. The reason why the therapist did this was because he thinks the dream, was a projection on what’s going on with Stan. People who use projection as a pattern tend to feel that they are victims of circumstances, and they believe that people have hidden meaning behind what they say (Corey, 2015).
Gestalt therapist recognize that the past will make regular appearance in the present moment, usually because of some lack completion of that past experience (Corey, 2015). Rather than talking about his judgmental father, a dialogue was used by imaging his father was in the room and confront his father. The reason for this was to give Stan opportunity to see where he’s stuck at in his everyday life. This points towards stuff he need to work on in his future.
Behavior therapy practitioners focus on directly observable behavior, current determinants of behavior, learning experiences that promote change, tailoring treatment strategies to individual client, and rigorous assessments and evaluation (Corey, 2015). Stan was asked by the therapist to do homeworking. His homework was to approach one of his professors about his anxiety he was experiencing in her class. Therapeutic tasks that clients carry out in daily life, or homework assignments, are a basic part of this approach. A follow up is important find out how did it go, why the client didn’t do it, or what the client learned from it. Stan didn’t approach his professor because it was a line and she wouldn’t have enough time to talk to him. The client, with the help of therapist, defines specific treatment goals at the outset of the therapeutic process (Corey, 2015). Therapist and the client practice with him approaching his professor by using social skills training. This training will help the client learn to do stuff such as approaching his professor.
