Purpose of Assignment 

The purpose for the curriculum project assignment is to enable the student enrolled in ED 681 to apply the theories of learning and principles of curriculum planning, design, development, and implementation presented in the course through the preparation of a curriculum product that can be used in the classroom.

Requirements for the Assignment

The curriculum project should include an Introduction, Overview, and specific lessons.  The lessons within the project should be built around a specific goal and related objectives (outcomes) selected by the student. The student may select the content area, topic, and grade level/s for the lessons. The curriculum project may be an extension of an existing curriculum used by the student in his/her classroom or taught in his/her school, a revision of an outdated curriculum unit or set of lessons, an adaptation of an existing unit or set of lessons for a special population, or a totally new product. The project may be an adaptation of existing curriculum to the Universal Design for Learning format or the Student-Centered Environment Format. The project also may be a portion of a longer unit (for example, the first seven days of a three-week unit). The completed project should be designed to take about five to ten days of classroom instruction. If the project is a revision of an outdated curriculum unit or set of lessons, or an adaptation of an existing unit or set of lessons for a special population or for use of the UDL format, the student must discuss the existing materials with the instructor prior to beginning the revision, and present specific plans for how the curriculum is to be revised. If students plan to modify or extend lessons developed for another Goucher course or an Internship assignment, it is imperative that the student provide examples of the existing materials for the instructor in order for credit to be granted for the project. The curriculum project may be done individually, or it may be a group project. All members of the group must be enrolled in ED 681 at the time the project is developed. The completed materials generally are about 12 to 16 pages in length.  Group projects may be longer.

The project should be developed in enough detail so that a novice teacher would be able to use it in his/her instructional program.

Important Note: Because the curriculum project is to reflect application of the concepts included in the course, the student should read and reflect upon the material in the “Part I: Introduction” section below before beginning the development of the unit.

Format for the Curriculum Project

The completed project should have three sections: Introduction; Overview (one page); and Lessons. The number of lessons developed will depend on the goals and objectives (outcomes) for the project. Completed projects should include a minimum of five lessons for individual submission, or seven lessons for a group submission, unless otherwise arranged with the instructor. The format used for the development of individual lessons may be that used in the student’s school or school system, or one of the sample lesson formats provided in the course resources. Students also may use the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) format.

Introduction

The introduction to the unit should provide the context and background for the curriculum materials, and should indicate clearly how the student has applied specific concepts discussed in ED 681 in developing the unit. (The “audience” for the Introduction is the Instructor of ED 681.)

When preparing the Introduction, students may type either the question or key words related to the question before preparing the response to the question. The material in italics is explanatory, and does not need to be “reproduced.”  Where appropriate, students may wish to use a chart format in responding to questions.

The introduction should include responses to the following questions:

  • What is the title of your project, and for which students is the curriculum intended? Explain where this unit or curriculum segment “fits” in terms of the overall curriculum. (What has preceded it?  What will follow it?)

Note: If your unit is a revision or “reworking” of existing curriculum, please explain what that curriculum is and why and how you have revised or modified it. Please be specific in your response. Additionally, please highlight the revisions in a clear manner, such as using a different color type or italics.

Part A.   Articulating a Vision for Learning/Purpose of Education in Society Purpose of Education

  • What is the purpose, or rationale, for developing the curriculum?  Why it is important for students to learn the content and skills included in the materials?
  • Explain how the curriculum reflects the Maryland College and Career Ready Standards.  If it does not, please explain why.
  • Is the philosophy that influenced development of your curriculum primarily perennialist, essentialist, progressivist, reconstructionist, or a combination of these philosophies? Please support your response.
  • How does the curriculum unit you have developed align with the vision/mission statement of your school? (If you are not teaching currently, you may select a school in which you might implement it, such as the school of a classmate.)

Part B.  Application of Theory and Research

  • Describe how the design dimensions of scope, sequence, integration, continuity, vertical and horizontal articulation, and balance were addressed when you developed your materials. What considerations were made for relevance and transferability? Please address all six dimensions. (For example, with regard to scope, how did you determine what to include within the unit, or what knowledge was of most worth? With regard to integration, explain how you have incorporated content from another subject area/s within your unit. Is the unit sequenced whole to part? Part to whole? Easy to difficult? How does the unit deal with continuity [the repetition, reappearance, or revisiting of important content and/or skills]?  In terms of balance, was appropriate weight or emphasis given to various aspects of the unit? How is the content linked to what comes before and after this unit [vertical articulation], and what is taught concurrently in other subject areas [horizontal articulation]? Part C. Concepts of Diversity

  • Describe the types of provisions that have been made to address the special needs of individual students. How have the lessons been differentiated? How were UDL considerations included? (See materials in Course Resources for Psychological Foundations of Curriculum.) Each lesson in the curriculum you have developed should include accommodations for students with special needs.)
