ECO 310 MIDTERM ASSIGNMENT. You will answer two of the following, one from group A and one from group B. Each of your answers should be at least 750 words and draw on at least two different readings. Note that 750 words are a minimum; a thorough, well-argued answer may well take you 1000 words or more

I will grade the midterms based on:
– how well organized and clearly written they are. Your essay should have a well-defined structure, with the main points stated clearly and backed up with supporting arguments and evidence.

– how effectively you answer the question. This means that you directly address the question you choose and that your arguments make sense and are consistent with our class discussions and the readings.ECO 310 MIDTERM ASSIGNMENT

– how well you support your arguments from the readings. I do not want to see long quotes — short quotes of up to a sentence or two — but I do want to see references to specific passages or sections of the texts, and to specific facts discussed or points made in the readings. Please note that when you do quote from the reading, it’s important to explain how that quote supports the argument you are making.

Answer one question from each group:

Group A

1. What conditions had to be met before production (and society in general) could be organized around the self-expansion of capital? What obstacles prevented the emergence of capitalism in earlier periods?ECO 310 MIDTERM ASSIGNMENT

2. What was the role of the state in the development of capitalism? What specific things did the state do that supported (or interfered with) this development?

3. What makes capitalism different from ways of organizing production? What specific features distinguish capitalism from other systems? Should plantation slavery be considered a form of capitalism, or something else?

4. What connection was there between slavery and the industrial revolution? How did the expansion of slavery support and/or conflict with the development of the industry?

5. How did conditions of labor change during the period the readings have covered? How was the experience of work different in the 19th century compared with earlier periods? Please be specific about which group(s) of workers you are discussing.
