For this coursework, I’m trying to get solid ideas. I need to find 15 chemicals and procedures that can be used to make bricks stronger (about 15mm size small brick pieces). Bricks have pores, so my intention is to fill the pores (by absorption) with some chemical and make the chemical solidify inside the bricks and make it strong and the solidified outcome should be water insoluble, which means when I put the bricks in water, the filled material should not dissolve in water. For an instance,

1. Aqueous calcium hydroxide reacts with carbon dioxide to form a white precipitate, calcium carbonate. Ca(OH)2 + CO2 –> CaCO3 + H2O. which makes brick pieces stronger and final CaCO3 have very low solubility in water.

so, the requirements,

1. The chemical should solidify over time by curing it with some other chemical or gas etc
2. pH level should be above 12, because some steel will be touching these bricks later. I need it to be non-corrosive.
3. It should be solidified within 24 hrs (if it cures within 1hr that’s good)
4. Not very costly (eg: if it is a liquid chemical 4 liters for $100 is ok)
5. The chemical is not rare to find
6. The process should be relatively easy to perform in a lab
7. Should not involve very poisonous chemicals or chemicals that explodes (safety of the lab and personals)
8. There should be no one has applied the same chemicals to the bricks before (it should be unique ideas)
9. References of journal articles should be provided where possible to back the idea.
10. Exact Chemical reactions and process should be provided

My ideas upto now: PVA (bricks pieces stick to each other, so this would not be a good idea either), any resin types, Ca(Oh)3, growing crystals inside pores (but this takes more than 24 hrs so it’s not good as well as I see)

I have fully equipped lab with many instruments, even the vacuum chambers, pressure chambers of large size.
