The Gospel of Mathew was directed to the Jews and gentiles willing to seek salvation. It is only in Mathew’s Gospel that the word “Church” appears. His gospel can be categorized in various themes.
The gospel of Mathew focuses mainly on the teachings of Jesus and his earthly life. It also highlights some of the prophecies that Jesus fulfilled as predicted in the Old Testament. He terms Jesus as the Son of God, Lord, Christ, Lord, Son of man and Son of David. It shows Jesus had Authority over the Earth; how he healed and set people free from demons and despite all that humility he portrayed humility and service to humankind and at the end suffered on the hands of humans and then died to save them (Elwell et al 2013). As a Christian this teaches us the spirit of service to God’s people and also teaches us to endure and appreciate suffering.
Love is a theme that pops out in the gospel of Mathew. Mathew 7:12, he sums up the law and prophets by teaching people to do unto others what they would love to be done onto them. He further encourages Christians to love everyone and not only their friends and family but also their enemies. It gives an example of our heavenly father who shines the Sun on everyone (the good and the evil) and let the rain pour on everyone regardless of their deeds. To emphasize more on love, it gives an example of a child and his father, specifically if a child asks his father for bread and so he will have (Mathew 7:9). Therefore, as a child of God whatever you seek from God He shall grant it to you. Therefore, as Christians we should learn to pray to God our Father and trust that He will answer to our needs. Additionally, as a Christian you should learn to love both the righteous and unrighteous and treat everyone with love or rather the way you would prefer to be treated.
The link between the Old and the New Testament – the Gospel of Mathew links the old and the New Testament and seeks to highlights the fulfillment of some of the prophecies in the Old Testament (Elwell et al 2013). For instance Jesus is viewed as the son of David and the descendant of Abraham, Mathew 1:1 and was born from a virgin woman as predicted in Isaiah 7:14.
Evangelism and mission: – this theme is characterized when Jesus disciples’ are commanded to go and preach to the lost Israelites, heal the sick and cast out demons from those possessed by them, Mathew 10:5. In Mathew 28:19 when the 11 disciples were in Galilee, they were given the Authority to go preach to the nations the Lord’s teachings, baptize them and teach them to obey God’s teachings. Hence the obligation as a Christian with the preaching calling to teach God’s people His ways and lead them to salvation.
Discipleship: – Mathew brings out the element of discipleship as one who follows Christ teachings and leads others to do the same. Mathew 18:20 also emphasize on obeying Gods teachings and when more than one come together in God’s name God will be in a mid. Jesus commissioned his eleven disciples, while in Galilee, to baptize and teach the nations to live in his ways, Mathew 28: 19, hence a duty as Christian to teach others and lead them to God’s ways. Lastly, Mathew 6:33, views that transforming your life to reflect God’s kingdom another attribute of discipleship. Mathew also highlights (Mathew 6:33) discipleship as loving God wholeheartedly and choosing Him alone since no one can be devoted to two masters at the same time.

Mathew emphasized that Jesus fulfilled Old Testament messianic prophecies and expectations, because there were made by different prophets in the Old Testament and yet they were all fulfilled by Jesus (Elwell et al 2013). Isaiah began by prophesying that Jesus will be borne by a virgin woman (Mary his mother was a virgin) this was fulfilled. However, they encountered several obstacles such as the attempted murder by Herod, which led to deaths of a million boys in Bethlehem, but Jesus evade this through angles talking to Joseph in a dream (Jeremiah). This led to Jesus fling to Nazareth with Joseph hence the prophecies that (he will be called a Nazarene). Jesus also fulfilled other expectations as per the Old Testament such as the prophecies regarding Jesus ‘healing many’ as spoken through prophet Isaiah.
