II-The Topic In this paper you have three tasks: (1) Describe Athenian democratic ideology. Why did Athenians think that democracy was the ideal form of government for Athens? Relevant sources: the ancient sources listed in I-A above (Plato, Thucydides, etc.) Note: In addition to the sources listed above, you will want to make use of the information we covered in class on Wednesday 18 January. You will recall that we touched upon six distinct components of Athenian democratic ideology: 1-All Athenians possess some ability to govern 2-Some possess more ability to govern than others 3-Participation allows individuals to develop their innate political gifts, thus enabling them to judge wisely and pick proper individuals to carry out decisions 4-Participation ensures that the people as a whole gets voice in affairs 5-Insight and skills of individuals can be pooled. 6-Power corrupts. This material is an obvious starting point, but you will need to use the ancient sources to develop and support your ideas about Athenian democratic ideology. Many of the reasons Athenians believed that democracy was the ideal form of government for Athens were a matter of belief rather than a matter of logic. Do not let this bother you. You are not providing a reasoned defense of democracy from your own perspective. You are describing how Athenians thought about their democracy. Please do NOT produce an answer which is fundamentally rational and political or historical in nature, which is to say an answer which seeks to trace the roots of Athenian democratic ideology to the socio-political history of the Athenian state. If you are unclear about this aspect of the paper, please make an appointment to sit down and talk with me about it well in advance of the due date of the paper. (2) Describe how that each component of Athenian democratic ideology was actualized in Athenian democratic institutions. Relevant source: Thorley’s Athenian Democracy (all) Note: Your exploration of the institutions and practices of the Athenian democratic state should focus on those facets of Athenian governance that directly reflect Athenian democratic ideology. You need not provide a detailed summary of the entire structure of Athenian democratic government. (3) Assess the advantages and disadvantages of the structure of Athenian democratic government. Relevant sources: primarily your own thoughts and analysis but supported where relevant on the basis of any of the assigned material III-Guidelines A-Your paper should consist of 4-6 double-spaced pages of well-thought out and well-organized text. I will stop reading at the end of 6 pages and grade accordingly, so there is no benefit to running long. B-You may approach the composition of this paper in any way you see fit, but your paper should conform to the basic structural and formatting guidelines in the CLST 1 handout: “Ten Things You Need to Know About Writing A History Paper” (see below). C-In the first two parts of your paper, listed as (1) and (2) above, you must support your arguments using the assigned material. Put another way, you should feel yourself obligated throughout to prove your assertions using the assigned texts. Do not make statements that you cannot support. Without evidence you are engaged in speculation, which, while sometimes interesting, is not the task at hand. D-Do not engage in a frenzy of secondary reading. I strongly encourage you to use only the assigned material. E-The work you hand in must be your own. All concepts, wording, phrasing and direct quotation taken from another author must be cited in accordance with the rules and formatting systems contained in Dartmouth’s booklet Sources: Their Use and Acknowledgement (http://www.dartmouth.edu/~sources/). A simple rule to live by is this: when in doubt, insert a citation. You may consider this your official plagiarism warning. F-Before handing in your paper, please make sure that you have: 1-Proofread your paper. Your grade will suffer should your paper have more than six technical errors. 2-Numbered the pages. This makes it easier for me to provide intelligible comments on your work. 3-Included a “Works Cited” page listing only (and all) the sources that you utilized. The relevant bibliographic information is as follows: Aristotle. The Politics. Trans. Jonathan Barnes. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1996. “Erichthonius and Athenian Autochthony”. CLST 1 Handout. Herodotus. The History. Trans. David Grene. Chicago: The University of Chicago Press, 1987. Plato. Protagoras. Trans. Benjamin Jowett. New York: Viking Press, 1948. Thorley, John. Athenian Democracy. London: Routledge, 1996. Thucydides. The Peloponnesian War. Trans. Richard Crawley. New York: The Free Press, 1996. 4-In citing specific passages from the ancient sources in the body of your paper, use book/section numbers, not page numbers. More specifically: –for Aristotle, cite by section and line number, e.g., 1280.1-4 –for Herodotus, cite by book and section, e.g., 3.80 –for Plato cite by section number and letter, e.g., 318a-318c –for Thucydides, cite by book and section, e.g., 2.36. 5-In citing specific passages from the modern sources, use page numbers.
