Get Help Now!1) Based on your initial observations and written analyses completed for ASSIGNMENT 1, develop a specific research problem/question to be further investigated (i.e. the variation in behavior of males versus females when entering a store with a glass store front. My specific research problem/question to be further investigated from my observation at Panera Bread is how do social status, work experiences, and lifestyles affect the way a group of people interact in certain social settings?
2) Identify the key variables you are going to be investigating, and develop an operational definition for each of them. (this should include at least two variables, but not more than four). Your operational definitions will help to provide parameters for how to record variations in your observations.
3) Write a hypothesis for what you expect to observe in your second round of observations. My hypothesis for what I expect to observe in this second observation is people who work in a professional environment tend to interact with others of the same social status and adapt an appropriate, professional behavior in the same social setting.
4) Repeat observations. This should be done at the SAME social setting as in ASSIGNMENT 1 at approximately the same time of day (if you can do this one or two weeks later on the same day, it would be great!) My first observation took place on Thursday, May 19th at 12:30 p.m. This second observation was conducted on Thursday, June 2nd at 12:45 p.m.
5) When you have returned from you observation, type up your notes. Review your notes for patterns in behavior, socio-demographic characteristics, etc. AND how they corresponded with your expectations/hypothesis. In reviewing and typing up my notes, the behaviors and characteristics are the same as my expectations. I have frequented this Panera Bread many times over the lunch hour through the years of working in Chicago. The social norm has always been working professionals of middle age. Since this is in the business district, it makes sense that that is the norm for this establishment at this time.
6) Describe observations using ‘thick description’ of the location (i.e. building you were in (what is the architecture like), descriptions of people there (in terms of socio-demographic characteristics: age, race/ethnicity, gender, socio-economic status), sounds, smells, temperature, time of day and week, etc); I am in the same building as my first observation which is the Panera Bread, located at 250 South Wacker Drive. It is a 15 story building that is about 50 years old. As in my first observation, this location is crowded today as well. I would guess that the average age is 40 years old on this day also. The difference in this day as opposed to my first observation is that there are 3 sets of families with children and babies in strollers on this day. It is summer time now and the kids are out of school so perhaps families are touring Willis Tower and the city today. The majority of the people are white females. A small percentage are Black and Indian. I count only 8 males and 2 Asian females.
7) Analyze your observations in terms of how they supported/did not support your hypothesis. I believe that my observations supported my hypothesis in the way that, again, there were mostly middle age professionals in this Panera Bread. The working professionals tend to interact with those of the same social status and adapt an appropriate, professional behavior in the same social setting. Thus, The Social institution of this group as a whole suggests that everyone here knows the behavior that is expected of them in this setting and at this time.
8) What is a possible sociological/theoretical explanation for the trends you observed? This is best done by using our textbook and other sources to provide credibility to your analyses. Analyze your observations using a minimum of 6 sociological concepts and two theories from the textbook.
9) Discuss the differences between your inductive observations and your deductive observations. How did the way you were observing change? How did what you observed change?
10) Briefly describe and compare your thoughts/feelings in the two steps. Did you prefer one approach to the other? Why/why not?
