Ketone bodies are produced when oxaloacetate enters the glugoneogenesis process rather than the citric acid cycle when insulin deficiency produces high levels of acetyl co-A. Ketones, such as beta-hydroxybutyrate, acetone, and acetoacetate then build up in the blood.
