Appropriate Technology in the Business World? Instant messaging, texting, social media–when does it work in business? Most people entering the workplace today have grown up with smart phones and technology-driven communication. It’s only natural to see business communication to begin to adopt these technology-driven communication channels. How effective are they in business? Is there an appropriate and inappropriate time to use. Give an example of misuse of technology-driven communication you’ve witnessed in the workplace. How would you manage this? “Technology in my opinion can be a very dangerous thing. It seems like in todays world everyone is so focused in on their phones and computers they cannot see what is directly in front of them. Of course in today’s world without technology business would be next to impossible. It is so easy to shoot a coworker an email, call a client, order new supplies, and so much more. There are definitely appropriate times and inappropriate times for technology. An example of this would be during an office meeting or conference call, there is no reason for you to have a cell phone or your computer. Most people will just get distracted by different apps or texts. I used to to run a crew working at as sports complex and we did all of the grounds keeping. I had one kid that worked with me and all he did was sit on his phone and scroll through twitter. Well, one day we were working for about 2 hours before one of the guys realized he was nowhere to be found and we ended up finding him sitting in the truck instead of working. This kind of thing is something I cannot tolerate in the workplace. You could try to enforce some type of time limit of employees on their phones, but most of our guys listened to music while mowing grass, and to keep in touch with our other crews. I guess if I had to implement a policy on this I would tell my guys to try to keep the phones while we are on the job site to a maximum of 5 minutes an hour except for emergencies. All in all something like that would almost be impossible to regulate. Sometimes you just have to trust your employees, or get rid of them.”
