A. Purpose of Assignment – Apply ethical reasoning and methods to an ethics challenge in health
care.

B. Subject – Choose a health care-related experience – complicated by an ethical
dilemma, conflict or other difficulty involving conflicting values. The
experience may be one in which you were directly involved (as a professional or
a patient) or one that you witnessed (e.g., involving a family member or good
friend). If you have had no such experience, you may select a narrative from
fiction or from the news that fits the parameters of the task. You may, for
instance, choose a contemporary health care- related problem of your choosing
in which ethical issues are at stake

(Note: I am not looking for documentation of a
conflict that was easily resolved. I prefer that you select a situation that
may have left you or those involved, if you have chosen a fictional narrative,
with troublesome questions, a sense of incompleteness [which is not to say that
a perfect solution was available].)

C. Form and method:

Provide:
1. A brief summary of the issue and primary ethical question it represents (in
one paragraph);

2. The facts of the situation, which may include

a. The pertinent
history (medical or otherwise), proposed interventions (and their risks and
alternatives if known) and prognosis;

b. The different viewpoints of parties to the case, including the “personal
narrative(s)” which may contribute to these viewpoints;

c. Communications
(problematic or not) that occurred among the parties preceding the moment when
you propose ethical analysis and mediation.

3. Your reasoning about how you approach ethical resolution of the problem(s):

a. Analyzing the
issues considering the 4 principles (autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence,
justice). Please identify the theory or theories on which you are relying and
explain its relevance (good will, virtue, duty, consequentialism,
utilitarianism, etc.);

b. Weighing moral status (if applicable).

4. It is not a requirement to cite references.
However, if any of you relied on published writings in your reasoning process,
please cite them (in-text and reference list) in APA format. Also, of course,
if the health care–related experience about which you write was found in a
novel, short story, news piece (written or otherwise), or other written source,
please provide a citation.

D. Conclusions (nickel down): State what you see as
1. The best way to resolve the issue(s) ethically (and by virtue legally),
while
2. Acknowledging remaining difficulties or questions, and how you would
approach them.

E. Length of paper: 4-5 pages double-spaced, 12- point Calibri or Times New Roman font.
The paper should follow APA format for term papers (title page, running head,
headers, page numbers, etc.).
