Get Help Now!For all of the assignments, except for the collage or bucket list, you must use 12 point Times New Roman or Ariel font and 1-inch margins, double-spaced. Everyone is required to do a short literature review as one of the assignments (at least 5 pages of text). The literature review must include an APA format reference list and use APA style references in text (literature review described further below and in a separate handout on Canvas).
- “Dear Mary” Letter. In this portfolio assignment you will write a fictitious letter
to your dear friend “Mary” who has just found out she is expecting a baby. You
are encouraged to include information that would be considered to be crucial for
Mary to know. Examples of information that you might like to provide includes
the stages of prenatal development, teratogens to stay away from, the importance
of nutrition, stages of labor, birthing options, prenatal yoga and prenatal massage,
Lamaze classes, and prenatal testing. This assignment does not need to be in APA
format, requires no citations, and should be written as though you were writing a
letter to a good friend. You and get creative with the formatting of your responses
if you like. If you are a parent yourself, you may want to include particular
knowledge that you have gained by experience. This assignment will demonstrate
your knowledge of the prenatal period of development and your ability to
effectively communicate that knowledge to someone else. This assignment
should be about 2 pages long – double-spaced. - Learning Activity. For this portfolio assignment you must design an original
learning activity for preschool aged children (ages 2-4). The activity can focus on
cognitive (e.g., such as learning how to use a particular toy, teaching particular
vocabulary words), social (e.g., organizing a play environment), or physical (e.g.,
learning fine motor skills via a musical instrument) aspects of learning. This
assignment has no page requirement but you must consider the following: Does it address an area of learning that 2 to 4 year olds are capable of, what are the
required materials for the activity, how many 2 to 4 years olds are required for the
activity or should the activity be limited to, what is successful completion of the
activity (i.e., what is the desired outcome), how will your students be rewarded
for successful completion of this activity, and what are the potential implications
of this activity on self-esteem and beliefs about self-efficacy. - Parenting Styles. In this portfolio assignment you will write a reflection essay on
the parenting styles of your parents or guardians when you were growing up and
reflect on the impact these styles have had on you as an emerging adult. Specific examples must be included to support your beliefs. This assignment is a great opportunity for you to connect your personal experiences to course content as well as
demonstrate your understanding of the implications of different parenting styles
on human development. This assignment should be about 3, double spaced
pages long. - Developmental Hurdles. This paper requires you to think about your own life
and apply what you have learned in this class to how you faced and surpassed a
developmental challenge in your life. A challenge could be anything from getting
your driver’s license to going on your first date to applying (and getting accepted)
to college. You can offer explanations that involve physical, cognitive, and/or
social and personality factors that were a part of the challenge and/or a part of
how you dealt with the challenge. This paper should be about 3 pages long.
Please offer specific examples from theories, concepts, ideas presented in the
textbook that relate directly to your experience (See example below).
Say, for example, that a hurdle for you was college admission. You could
write about things like how being more advanced cognitively aided you in your
ability to write your personal statements, how your ability to regulate emotions
helped you cope with the stress involved in the process, how relationships with
your parents or friends (or both) helped or hurt you during this time, how other
sources of stress made it difficult (or not) to manage the process, how other
obligations in your life made it difficult to attend to the task. You could
incorporate ideas from Erikson regarding how your quest to establish an identity
influenced the process or how your relationship with a significant other made it
more difficult or easier to complete the task. You could talk about how you
managed stress during this time by maintaining healthy eating habits, getting rest,
and exercising. There are so many things that you can incorporate – I hope these
examples help. This assignment should be 2 to 3 pages long. - Adolescent Reflection. The selected written reflections provide the opportunity
for you to make personal connections to socio-emotional factors that influence
adolescent development. Select one of the following three reflection questions to
write about:
a. Erikson said that the crisis of adolescence is “identity versus role
confusion”. How was this crisis present in your adolescence? How was it
resolved?
b. Who was the most influential person in your life when you were an
adolescent? Why was this person so influential? Why is having a good role
model in adolescence important for social and emotional development?
c. Many people consider the prom a rite of passage. Do you agree? How did your
prom have an impact on your social development as a teenager?
This assignment should be at least 2 full pages to 3 pages. - Interviews. Students must interview at least two different people who have
experienced one or more of the following life situations:
Confused about a career path
Getting married
Having a child
Taking care of an aging parent
Losing a loved one
For this assignment compare and contrast similarities and difficulties between the
interviewees. Once the interviews have been conducted write a paper describing
the interviewees’ experiences and how they relate to developmental theories. This
assignment provides you with the opportunity to think critically about
development theories as well as strengthen your interviewing skills. This
assignment should be about 3-double-spaced pages long. - Developmental Collage. In response to the presentation of various adolescent and
adult developmental theories, create a collage out of magazine images and other
mixed media to represent your own personality. Next, use the collage as a base to
describe which adult developmental and/or personality theory you subscribe to
most and how you can use that theory to describe your current stage of adult
development. In addition to gaining a deeper understanding of adult development
and personality theories, collage making provides the opportunity for the visual
representation of acquired knowledge. This assignment should consist of the
collage and about a page of text describing your collage and the theme and
theories associated with it. The collage should be clearly related to your developmental experiences. - Milestone. For this assignment, think of a milestone that you have not yet
achieved. Write about the different aspects of the milestone (e.g., is it a common
milestone or uncommon?, is it associated with being a certain age?, is it specific
to a particular culture?, etc.). Explain why it is a desirable milestone to you and
how you plan to attain it. What obstacles might you anticipate in your quest to
achieve this milestone? Is it important to others in your life (e.g., parents, spouse)
that you achieve this milestone? What is your motivation for the achievement of
this particular milestone? All of these are considerations you should include in
your paper and you are most definitely encouraged to add other considerations as
well. This assignment should be about 3 full (double spaced) to 4 pages. - Developmental Bucket List. Develop and present your personal bucket list in any format you select. Possible formats can be posters, collages, index cards, power point slides (printed out), interpretive dance (video link) or other performance art, and videos. This assignment provides an opportunity for you to make a personal connection to assist you in understanding differences in how individuals deal with the prospect of their own mortality. The open format also allows you to present your information in a way
that meets or maximizes your individual learning style. If you make a video or powerpoint of your bucket list, then you must be sure to send it to me, and all of the TA’s so we can be sure to take your list into account when grading your portfolio. You should also write a 1 to 2 page paper, describing how the items on your bucket list are connected to your development. - Literature Review. This assignment, which everyone must do requires that you
choose a topic of interest within the broad area of developmental psychology.
Your topic can (and should) focus any development period you choose, from
prenatal to geriatric. It is easiest to choose an area where a good amount of
research has already been done. Once you choose a topic you should seek out
research articles that are related to your topic. Your literature review must
include at least eight peer reviewed journal citations from eight different journal articles, but more references is better (Wikipedia and Psychology Today are not peer reviewed journals). The goal of this assignment is to write a short (5 pages of text – double spaced), well-organized review of the current literature of a topic in developmental psychology. Five pages of text means the actual writing that you do on the topic – this does not include a title page (if you decide to include one) or the reference section. If you go longer than 5 pages, that is fine. However, I do not expect this to be an exhaustive review of the research in your chosen area. When writing, you should write as though you know that the person reading your paper knows absolutely nothing about your topic and you are trying to give them a good basic understanding of the topic and the relevant research findings related to the topic. Below is a website link that will go into more detail about the process of writing a literature review and I have posted a sample paper that might help you understand what is expected.
