A fault tolerance refers to a set up that prevent computers from failing in case of unexpected error. In order to make use of fault tolerance, organizations need to know how a network may fail and take steps in order to prevent failure. There are a number of methods that are used to achieve fault tolerance. For instance, power failure can be prevented by using a UPS. Power surge can be prevented by using surge protector. Data loss can be prevented by using backup systems. Firewall can be used to prevent unauthorized access. To make choice of the different fault tolerance methods, it is important to consider their importance to the organization. The most important should be implemented before the others.

I agree that the use of a UPS might be considered fault tolerance, it will keep the system running for a little while, but it may only keep the system up long enough to shut it down gracefully.  I am not sure how a firewall would be considered fault tolerance though, please elaborate.

I’m assuming you are referring to having dual firewalls so if one goes belly up the other will take over.

I have not had a lot of experience with firewalls, I have never seen one set up in a cluster before.  There may be redundant parts on a firewall.

A firewall prevents unauthorized access to a private network, more so in internet. Everything leaving and entering the internet passes through the firewall. Any suspicious message is blocked depending on the security criteria set. Firewall also allows remote access to a private network by use of secure authentication logins and certificates. Hardware firewalls are in form of routers while software firewalls are installed in a computer and you can control its security features. It protects someone from controlling or gaining access to your computer.

I understand what a firewall is and you appear to as well but I still do not see how a firewall is fault tolerant.
