Final Project:
For the final project, you will investigate how a poet uses images to translate the speaker’s feelings within the confessional mode. You will do conduct your investigation through imitation and analysis. To begin, you will choose 3 poems by a poet we have read in class or poems from the collection you wrote on in your midterm.

You are welcome to choose another collection from an author on the midterm list, and you are of course welcome to borrow a book from me.

Part I (40%): Imitation
Make copies of the three poems and make note of the categories of images the poet uses. You are looking here for both figurative and descriptive language. Below are a few examples of the kinds of questions you might use:
• Are the images from the natural world or the manmade one?
• Are they cosmic or urban?
• Does the poet use images from mythologies or a holy text?
• Does the poet mix images from different realms?
I want to see you engaging with each poem via annotations, i.e., underlining, highlighting, notes in the margins, etc.

You will then write an imitation of each of the poems you chose. In your imitations, you will focus primarily on using similar types of images to unpack how the speaker feels about the subject of the poem.

This section should have three poems from your poet and your imitations of those poems, for a total of six poems. One poem per page, and for this section, I would prefer that the copies are not front and back.

NOTE: The poems do not have to be about the same subjects, but you should aim for the same level of clarity that the poet uses as you write. That is, if you can tell that the poet is writing about a break up or a dying parent, a reader should be able to identify, as clearly, the subject of your poem. Try to write about something that matters to you, that you have experienced. Remember, we always have the plausible deniability of the speaker.

Part II (40%): Analysis (4-8 pages, double spaced)
In this section of the project, analyze how the image systems are working in conjunction with the confessional mode. Here you need a clear guiding claim about how the images work in both the poems you imitated and your own imitations.

First unpack the poems that you imitated, focusing on the below questions. This section should be in paragraph form (and you may need multiple paragraphs for each poem), and should begin with a summary of what the poem is about. Consider:
• Who is the speaker of the poem?
• What are they confessing?
• How do they feel about what they are confessing?
• How do the images, both descriptive and literal, work as vehicles for the feeling the poet evokes within the poem?

Then discuss how it felt to use those images in your own work. You should talk about each poem you wrote and consider the following:
• Who is your speaker?
• What are they confessing to?
• What were you trying to make the reader feel in the poem?
• How did the images you borrowed help you do that what you tried to accomplish?
• Did your imitations surprise you in any way?

Part III (20%): Reflection (~3 pages, double spaced):
The final part of the project is a reflection on the course and how it relates to your experience in college. That is, how does (did) the class function as a capstone. The answer cannot be that it hasn’t. Rather, I want you to think about how your experiences in this course are related to (both in similarities and differences) your experience as a student in college. That is, does the part stand for the whole or was your experience here categorically different.

Presentation: 5-7 minutes

For the presentation you will read one of the poems you imitated and then your imitation of that poem the class. After, you will discuss the image system and how it works in both of the poems.

Because we are doing 6 presentations per class, the time limit is strict. Everyone should endeavor to be on time for class so that we can begin promptly and have time for questions after.

I want to discourage you from using PowerPoint, but if you must, please email your presentation to me before class. Your PowerPoint should have, at most the poem you are imitating, your imitation, and your guiding claim about how the images are working in the confessional mode.

The presentation will be graded on the following criteria:
• Reading of the poems
• Clarity of your claim about how the images are working
• Appropriate length (no shorter than 5 minutes, and no longer than 7)
• Clear speaking that reaches the back of the classroom
